Creating Machine Embroidery with Alison Holt:
Flowers & Landscapes

In this 3+ Hour DVD we will take you on a journey through the garden and the beautiful English countryside of master free machine embroiderer Alison Holt, as she explores how to achieve dramatic effects in nature on silk in her sewing machine. From astilbes to alliums, Alison patiently and thoroughly covers everything you need to know to achieve your own dramatic and colorful effects with thread and a basic sewing machine.

That's correct - Alison says in the film, "any basic sewing machine will do -- as long as it does straight stitch and zigzag stitch" and even goes so far as to recommend you use your available threads to practice before spending any money on expensive supplies.

In Part 2 of the DVD, Alison explores the use of silk paints as a background media to achieve depth and contrast in her work. She works on two separate foundations, and uses a gutta pen to draw outlines on the silk before painting the areas with base colors. She stitches on top of the areas and creates a wonderful 'depth of field' effect in the painted background and threaded surface.

Finally, in Part 3, she combines everything she has taught up until now and demonstrates how to work with photographs and achieve some incredible effects, literally transforming a picture of roadside flowers into a one of a kind original threaded embroidered painting, "Penylan Lane" (cover of the DVD).
