Arimatsu•Narumi Shibori

CELEBRATING 400 YEARS OF JAPANESE ARTISAN DESIGN
In 1608, eight former farming families traveled from Kyoto along the Tokaido or 'Eastern Sea Road" connecting Kyoto to Tokyo in Japan, in search of a new life. They settled along Narumi, the 41st Station of the Tokaido where they founded a town called 'Arimatsu'. These simple farmers began to provide travel clothes made from Indigo Cotton, mimicking the fine patterns made in silk in Kyoto (and unavailable to commoners) but at a significantly lower cost. These shape resisted textiles, or 'shibori', were an immediate success and they began working as a collective producing textiles for kimonos, yukatas, and general household decoration and interior design. Over four centuries a tradition and industry grew which employed at its peak more than 20,000 people making Shibori textiles in Japan. In 2008 the towns of Arimatsu and Narumi and the guilds of Artisans from Aichi Prefecture commissioned this remarkably accurate and culturally significant film project. More than thirty local artists in Japan gave generously of their time and talents, and opened their homes and hearts to the world, so that Arimatsu•Narumi Shibori would be preserved, and celebrate more than 400 years of continuous production in 2008.
