Short Subject / Artist Portrait Documentary

Michael Swaine was a featured artist at the 2009 London Knitting & Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace, London, England. Michael was invited by the Arts Council (UK) and the show exhibitors to bring his unique sewing program he calls 'Mending for the People' to London -- to go 'Door to Door' mending and darning holes in socks, jeans and shirts.

The problem was Michael wasn't well known outside of the San Francisco Bay Area for his social activism and so Studio Galli was commissioned to produce this short subject documentary on Michael and his work which was streamed on the Show Internet Website and subsequently went on to become part of a textiles / social activism exhibition at the Bury St. Edmonds Gallery in England in 2010.

Ervin Somogyi is considered one of the greatest guitar makers in the world today. From his workshop in Oakland, California, he has produced steel string guitars for leading artists such as Alex d'Grassi, Will Ackerman, George Winston, Daniel Hecht, Michael Hedges, Steve Erquiaga, the California Guitar Trio, and the late John Denver.

In 2010 Ervin was completing the work on a set of guitar lutherie books, and wanted to produce a video that presented himself as an artist, as an author, and promoted his books.

We invited local composer and artist Steve Erquiaga to visit and we filmed Steve playing one of Ervin's guitars -- notice how the film interweaves between Ervin making guitars and Steve playing them; the relationship between the maker and the artist -- the artisan and the performer, is undeniable.
