The Guild of Artisans from the towns of Arimatsu and Narumi in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, are the oldest surviving collective of Japanese Shibori Artists in the world today. For 400 years these families have worked together producing colorfully rich textiles for clothing, home decoration and much more. 2008 marked 400 years -- four centuries that these villagers have banded together under the goal of continuing a tradition of shape resist dyeing and production that has become the darling of the textile world. Their story is not only about a love of textiles, it's about the ability to maintain tradition in a world that is constant seeking to redefine itself. |
